The Historical Journey of the Kimono
The Japanese kimono was inspired by the traditional Chinese garment known as “Hanfu.” Emerging through cultural exchange between countries, the kimono made a long journey from a traditional, locally worn Japanese garment to an everyday piece in the modern world. This is why the kimono is a special garment that carries traces of history into the present. It is more than clothing.
THE HEIAN AND EDO PERIODS
The kimono was developed in its modern form during the reign of Japan’s Heian rulers (794–1185). When it became popular among the aristocracy, its design varied according to gender and status. During the Edo period (1603–1868), when the kimono spread from the aristocracy to the wider public and became popular among ordinary people, it began to show far greater diversity in colors, patterns and materials.
THE MEIJI RESTORATION
The Meiji period (1868–1912), a symbol of the transition from an isolated feudal society to the modern world, is known as a complete restoration. Japan’s opening to foreign trade and increasing interaction with other cultures clearly influenced the symbolism of the kimono. During this period, everyday use of the kimono declined as the country modernized under the Meiji Restoration and came under the influence of Western clothing styles. Women added garments better suited to contemporary life to their wardrobes, while kimonos continued to be worn on special occasions and at traditional events.
INNOVATIVE KIMONOS
As all these developments unfolded, a project to introduce this cultural heritage to the world through the kimono was launched and research began. Drawing strength from the traditional kimono, designers created different styles that appealed to the modern world. To achieve this goal, Japan even brought together new dyeing techniques and materials. Adorned with refined, elegant and soft designs and diversified through alternative ways of wearing, these striking kimonos captured the attention of the global market. With their innovative and exciting character, they entered women’s wardrobes around the world as an indispensable styling piece.
NEW BEGINNINGS
From the late twentieth century to the present, the kimono has remained a special garment worn in Japan for ceremonies, weddings, festivals and traditional events, while gaining an important place in global fashion. It is now a meaningful alternative within everyday life. It continues to evolve through versatile, effortless and timeless designs and a wide variety of options. Through different designs, the kimono will continue to express long life, good fortune, peace, eternal beauty, the transience of life, a long and healthy lifespan, respect for nature, hope, longing, trust, love and new beginnings.
